Professor Campbell — This may be a mindless, stupid comment, since I have not read the article (or is it a post?) yet. But my mother was a member of a WASP family (not rich or snobby) with deep roots in New England. She told me quite often that in the her childhood in Massachusetts she vividly recalled the “No Irish Need Apply” signs everywhere on the doors and in the windows of business establishments, etc.
